The keyword, 2026 edition
A keyword is still a unit of measure. It’s no longer a unit of strategy.
What still holds
Google remains the index AI engines lean on: ChatGPT and AI Mode sub-queries often hit a search index. Solid classic SEO is the foundation of GEO.
What changed
5,2 → 7words: classic Google vs AI Mode
≈ 23words per ChatGPT prompt without web search (Semrush)
13,7 %pages cited in common by AI Overviews and AI Mode (Ahrefs)
A “good keyword” is no longer relevance + potential + competition. It’s the entry point of a cluster: pick it for the question family it opens, not for volume alone.
- Volume tools can’t see prompts: add Search Console, AI-bot logs and real prompt tests.
- One keyword = one page is dead: a page must cover a semantic cluster.
The long tail becomes a long sentence
ChatGPT sub-queries grew from about 6 to 12 words between October 2025 and January 2026 (Peec): the “long tail” is now written in full sentences, with context and constraints. A generic page matches none of them; a precise page matches several.
How to choose keywords in 2026
- Start from Search Console: those are your real queries, including the longest ones.
- Run each keyword through intent, then through query fan-out.
- Test the term in several AIs: who is cited, with which sources?
- Pick tools suited to your budget and market.
